A coastal defense fortification from 1896 through WWII, Fort Columbia now serves as a Washington State Parks heritage site.
Overlooking the mouth of the majestic Columbia River just outside the town of Chinook, Fort Columbia offers visitors the opportunity to explore three military batteries, including two rapid-firing artillery pieces, a number of original buildings, and a series of trails that traverse six miles of forested Scarborough Hill.
The military life of the fort is relived at the Fort Columbia Interpretive Center, which also contains exhibits on Chinook Indian culture. A donation of $2 per person and $5 per family is suggested to tour the interpretive center.
Open from Memorial Day through September 30 from 10 AM to 5 PM, the staff encourage day-use visitors to hike, picnic, and explore the historical and natural beauty of Fort Columbia. Although camping is not available, two fully-furnished vacation rentals can accommodate families and large groups overnight.
